In the South American country of Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni salt flat stretches for over 4,000 square miles, making it the largest in the world.

Captivated by the area for years, Japanese photographer Asako Shimizu made her way there in 2006, and captured the unique way in which the sky is reflected on the ground.

i feel like i am overflowing today;;; i am a big, vast monsoon sky. i yo-yo between emotions like lightning. melting between melancholy, passion, joy, gratitude and loneliness. i feel overwhelmed and belittled by the spectrum and weight of my feelings and at the same time empowered and zealous. my mind seems never to be silent lately and i exist inside of a cloud. i am an arm-length’s distance from all that surrounds me. i am so full of things, i need to release some of this energy, empty myself. why must i be so much like a waterfall? i think i need some time outside of my mind ~
